Acosta, Marina
My name is Marina Acosta, I am a sophomore at ASU West and an honored member of the Rodel Scholars Program. I am working towards a degree in Psychology as well as Sustainability. Currently, I am working with my partner Erika Grammer in The Rodel Junior Community Scholars program at Sahuaro Elementary. The objective of this project is to provide sixth grade students with resources to initiate and complete projects to impact their school and local community. Our goal is to promote civic leadership among these students so that they can act as role models for their schoolmates, as well as in their community. This is the second year that Erika and I have participated in this project, and we are pleased with the positive outcomes so far. We hope that year by year this project continues to improve!
Arroyo, Aurelio
My name is Aurelio Arroyo and I am a 21 year old senior from Gridley, California. I plan to major in Broadcast Journalism and become a Sports Broadcaster, hopefully for ESPN. I am a huge college football fan and just generally love sports and music. I am currently working on two projects this year. The first one being the Villa Oasis Alternative High School Project located in Eloy, AZ with Cherrelle Bullock. It is aimed at mentoring selected students in an effort to assist with their homework and show them that there is more to life than just working after high school. The second project I am currently working on is the ASU / University of Arizona “Food Fight.” This contest pits ASU against U of A in a can food fight to see who can collect more pounds of food for the St. Mary’s Food Bank.
Bullock, Cherrelle
My name is Cherrelle Bullock, and I am a freshman at ASU West. I am majoring in Life Sciences and eventually aspire to become a Pediatric Oncologist. I am very happy to have been chosen as a Rodel Scholar, as it will open up many doors in my life. The project I am currently working on is to design and update a scholarship database for high school and college students to find a wide variety of scholarships to in state colleges. The goal is to have information on all scholarships for every college in Arizona.
Campbell, Rachel
My name is Rachel Campbell and I am a 20 year old junior from Oldham County, Kentucky and Cave Creek, Arizona. I am a Special Education major that will graduate with a dual certification in Special Education and Elementary Education. I hope to teach special education in a rural elementary school after graduate school. I am a huge Sun Devil fan and go to every game! I am currently working on recruiting efforts at ASU West. More specifically, this project emphasizes recruiting students from the 150 least represented high schools at ASU West.
Conwell, Ashton
Hello, my name is Ashton Conwell and I am a freshman at ASU West. I am currently majoring in Special Education and minoring in English and plan to teach in a fifth grade classroom after I am certified. This is my first semester as a Rodel Scholar and I have greatly enjoyed the experience thus far. I, paired with Melissa Wilson, am working on a project which will ultimately result in a perfect place for all schools to come together and receive the help they need to achieve their goals. We will create a database where every school in the state of Arizona will be listed along with a few areas in which they desire to be aided by someone with a lot of experience concerning their particular issues. The point of this project is to aid schools while also providing aspiring professors with a venue where they might gain qualification for tenureship through their service.
Cruz, Joanna
My name is Joanna Cruz and I am a first-generation college freshman at Arizona State University. I was born and raised in San Luis, AZ, where I graduated high school. Currently, I am majoring in Secondary Education with an emphasis on mathematics. I love sports and working out. The project that my partner and I are working on is Arizona Scholarship Undergraduate (ASU) Database. The purposes of this project it to simplify acquiring institutional information and to create a Web site that contains information for every college in the state of Arizona. It has been an honor having this experience with my classmates and my partner.
Davies, Chambray
My name is Chambray Davies and I am a senior at Arizona State University at the West campus working on my Integrative Studies degree. After graduation I plan to attend medical school and become a dermatologist. This is my fourth exciting year as a Rodel Community Scholar. As a Rodel Scholar, I am currently working on the Arizona High School Town Hall Project. The goal of Arizona High School Town Hall is to bring students from around the state to identify and solve educational related concerns. In addition, we provide information on college enrollment, scholarships and financial aid as well as allow students to experience dorm life on a college campus. This year, Arizona High School Town Hall will be conducted in the Cochise, Pinal, and Apache Counties. Students will meet at designated high schools to craft solutions and create a consensus on the various agenda topics and help craft a final report to be presented to education, business, and political leaders in Arizona.
Davies, Jordan
My name is Jordan Davies and I graduated from Bourgade Catholic High School last year with the honor of being initiated into the Quill and Scroll society. I am majoring in Life Sciences and plan to pursue my education past my Bachelor’s Degree. Rodel has already opened several paths for me and I am excited to give all I have back into the program. The project that I am working on is the High School Dropout Attentional Biases Longitudinal study. The goal of this project is to further strengthen the ability to predict students who have a higher risk of dropping out by examining their physiological reaction to educational related threatening cues.
Fabian, Kristal
My name is Kristal and I'm currently a sophomore at ASU's West Campus. I'm majoring in Psychology and I am planning to continue conducting research and hopefully receive my doctorate within this field. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and I absolutely love the weather here! I'm extremely honored and privileged to have become a member of the Rodel Community Scholars Program.
Fallon, Jessica
My name is Jessica Fallon. I was born and raised in Glendale, Arizona. I am 19 years old and am a sophomore at Arizona State University. I am majoring in Special Education with a minor in Spanish. This is my second year in Rodel. Last year, Joseph Torres and I started the Remix Mentorship in the City of Avondale. Remix is a program for adolescents aged 14-17 who are currently on probation. This year Sasha and I are continuing Remix as well as building a curriculum for other mentoring relationships
Franco, Obed
My name is Obed Franco. I graduated from Maryvale High School in 2007. I am a junior at ASU's West campus. I am a third year Rodel Community Scholar. My major is Secondary Education and I hope to graduate with my teaching degree someday. Currently my partner and I are working on a project to create a database that includes all the schools in Arizona. The schools will range from elementary to High school and will include the contact information for the principal of each school. We plan to turn this over to ASU for recruitment and collaboration with these schools.

My name is Katrina Garcia and I was born and raised in Douglas, AZ and graduated from Douglas High School. Currently, I am a sophomore attending ASU West majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Public Relations. I am a well-determined individual that has a goal to surpass my next one. My project is entitled “Brain Research,” this will be a meta-analysis on children and adolescent behaviors that affect their education.
Grammer, Erika
My name is Erika Grammer and I am a sophomore at ASU West, majoring in Elementary Education. I am both extremely fortunate and proud to be a part of the Rodel Community Scholars for a second year. Each day I spend working on my project with the Rodel Junior Community Scholars, along with my partner Marina Acosta, is both career and life experience for me. In the future I would love to return and teach at my old elementary school, providing hope and inspiration for the young students of a high poverty area. I look forward to the many opportunities and excitement a career as a first grade teacher will bring to me, and I am planning to soon take advantage of the Rodel Teacher Initiative.

I am Charmaine Guillory, a graduate of Millennium High School and a junior studying business management and entrepreneurship. After receiving my degree, I plan to attend a school for fashion design to aid me in achieving my career goal of opening my own clothing store. I enjoy reading, writing, and anything that relates to fashion. I look forward to participating in the Rodel community once again and working on the PARENT project.
Hassell, Tycee
My name is Tycee Hassell and I am a junior at Arizona State University's Polytechnic campus majoring in Elementary Education. I plan to teach middle school math or elementary students once I graduate in two years. I am so excited to be a part of the Rodel Community Scholars. The Rodel Program has helped me meet new people and illustrate how we, as college students, can give to the community. I am excited to work on a research project studying university educational programs.

Hello, my name is Monica Hill and this year I am a sophomore. I graduated high school from Tolleson Union High School and now I am looking to pursue a B.S in psychology and hopefully a minor in criminology. I enjoy being a part of the Rodel Community Scholarship Program because the program supports the scholars as well as the community.
Hurtado, Sammy
My name is Sammy Hurtado I am 18 years old and I just moved up to Phoenix, Arizona from the small town of Douglas, Arizona. I am currently a full-time student at ASU West. My major, as of right now, is Global Business with an emphasis in marketing. I plan to one day travel the world, and hopefully my degree will help me do that. The Rodel Project that I am currently working on is the Douglas High School Business Plan. Our main objective is to recruit and retain quality teachers at Douglas High School.
Johnson, Sarah
My name is Sarah Johnson and I am a junior at Arizona State University. I am pursuing an Integrative Studies major with a business concentration and a communications minor. I am currently involved in several organizations on this campus that will greatly assist prospective and current college students. I am a part of The Rodel Community Scholars. In this program, I will be working on a project that focuses on creating an efficient scholarship database that will provide students a resource in finding financial aid for most colleges and universities in Arizona. I am also involved with the ASU West campus’ student government, which is a really exciting organization that allows me to network with both faculty and students. Lastly, I am a Community Assistant at the Las Casas Residential Hall. This position allows me to aid freshmen to become more adjusted to college life. I believe my involvement in these positions and organizations will greatly enhance my communicating, organizing, planning and managing skills, all of which will assist in my prospective career as a hotel manager.
Kunowski, Jeff
My name is Jeff Kunowski and I am a Junior at Arizona State University. I am an Arizona native and I currently live in Avondale. I am majoring in Integrative Studies with a concentration in Business. Some hobbies of mine include golfing, going to the gym, reading, and hanging out with friends. The project which Joseph Torres and I are working on involves the distribution of an Adaptation to College Study Survey which will be given to incoming freshman at the ASU campuses. The results of this survey will allow us to analyze the areas in which new college students are struggling, and begin to improve on those areas.
Magallanez, Matthew
My name is Matthew Magallanez and I am a freshman at ASU at the West campus. I am from the small town of Superior, Arizona. My major is Exploratory Social and Behavioral Sciences, but I eventually plan on majoring in Criminal Justice and Criminology. I am working with my partner, Sarah Tok, on the CTEL Faculty-Community Research Database. We are creating this database in an effort to create partnerships between CTEL professors and participating schools around Arizona, which will solve educational issues identified by the schools. The database will hold contact information of the participating schools and three areas of interest the schools have chosen. The database then can be used and accessed by the CTEL professors to establish partnerships.

My name is Marcae Matthews. I am from Eagar, AZ up in the White Mountains. I am a Senior here at ASU at the West campus and have been at this campus all fours years and love it! My major is Elementary Education with a concentration in Middle School Math and ESL (English as a Second Language). I love teaching and spent this past summer teaching English in Costa Rica. It was great! I can’t wait to be a teacher next year!

My name is Jennifer Martinez-Chavez. I am a returning Rodel Community Scholar. I am an education major and my graduation date is set for May 2010. I enjoy working with high school students, which my internship and Rodel has given me the opportunity to do. I also recently got married on June 6 of this year. I am excited about the upcoming school year and the project I get to work on through this awesome scholarship foundation.

Hi! My name is Marcae Matthews. I am from Eagar, Az up in the White Mountains. I am a junior here at ASU-West and have been at this campus all three years and love it! Reynoso, Bryce
My name is Bryce Reynoso. I am a junior attending ASU West. I have just entered the Professional Teacher Preparation Program in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership and my major is Secondary Education. This is my third year as a Rodel Community Scholar. I am working on two projects this year: College 101 with Franklin Police and Fire High School and the ASU / University of Arizona Food Fight. In College 101, I have created a class for high school juniors that will prepare them for their senior year and school after they graduate. The latter involves Rodel, State Farm, St. Mary’s Food Bank, and U of A. The project pits ASU with U of A in a competition to see which can raise the most food for their respective local food banks. I look forward to the completion of both of these projects and my second-to-last year of college.
Rodriguez, Lucia
My name is Lucia Rodriguez and I am a freshman at ASU at the West campus. I am 18 years old and I was born and raised in Mexico. Six years ago my family decided to migrate from Mexico to the small border town of San Luis, AZ, which is located just outside Yuma, AZ. I am majoring in Secondary Education with an emphasis in mathematics and a Spanish minor. My goal is to become a high school math teacher so that I can go back to my home high school and help my community. In high school I was part of National Honors Society and I was the President for Interact Club. This is my first year as a Rodel Community Scholar and I am hoping to be able to help others through this community. The project that I am participating in this year is the Parental Academic Related Educational Needs Training (P.A.R.E.N.T.), which is a handbook designed for parents with children entering high school. I am excited in participating in this project since the handbooks are going to be very beneficial to parents.
Rojas, Jesus
My name is Jesus Rojas and I am a proud member of the Rodel Scholar Community here at ASU West Campus. Currently, I am a freshman at ASU majoring in Secondary Math Education. I was born in San Luis Rio Colorado Sonora, Mexico 18 years ago. I lived in my birth town for 14 years when my family decided to move to the United Sates in 2005. As a graduate of San Luis High School in 2009, I joined the school's soccer team and became the captain during my senior year. At the moment, I am working on a project which consists of creating a principal contact database for principals from all schools in Arizona.
Shatto, Ryan
My name is Ryan Shatto and I was born and raised in Douglas, Arizona, which is a small border community to Mexico. I attended Douglas High School and graduated with the class of 2008. This Fall will be my second year at Arizona State University and as a Rodel Community Scholar as well. My project in Rodel this year consists of a study of the education programs of Universities in the Pac 10, Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big East, Mountain West and Ivy League universities which will all be compiled together to be used as a useful reference for the College of Teacher Education and Leadership. I feel very fortunate to be recognized as one of the achievers in the Rodel Community Scholars program and I am thankful that I can continue to contribute to this outstanding program.
Tocora, Jessica
My name is Jessica Tocora I was born and raised in Glendale, Arizona. This is my senior year and I am currently working on receiving a double bachelor degree in Global Business with an emphasis on finance and Spanish. I have an aspiration to become a successful Hispanic businesswoman, by assisting minority groups, in shortfall areas such as, education, finance, business and immigration. I look forward to my senior year, given that this will be my second year participating in the Rodel Community Scholar Program. My first year in Rodel my partner and I created workshops called “Money 101” for high school students, and we won the State Farm project of the year. This year I will be working with the Kurt Warner, First Things First Foundation in assisting with The Midwest Flood Relief. The Midwest Flood Relief was established by Kurt Warner to help with the rebuilding of thousands of homes destroyed due to the flooding. I trust that this upcoming experience will enhance my college career, by developing and improving my leadership skills, as well as, increasing my involvement within the community and making a difference.
Tok, Sarah
My name is Sarah Tok and this is my senior year at ASU at the West campus. I am majoring in Secondary Education and English. I am an Arizona native, and plan to teach in Arizona once I graduate. This is the first year I’ve been involved in the Rodel program, and am honored to be a part of it. Rodel is a unique opportunity which I plan to fully take advantage of. Currently my partner, Matthew Magallanez, and I are working on the CTEL Faculty Community Database. The Database will serve as a liaison between participating state schools and University faculty, for the purpose of research and other community issues.
Tometi, O'Shea
My name is O'Shea Tometi and I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. My parents were born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, before moving to the U.S. and having my two other siblings and I. I am a Global Business major and I plan on graduating in the Fall of '09. This is my second year in the Rodel Community Scholars program. I plan on continuing the study that my partner and I started last year that relates to AIMS mathematics scores with higher and lower income schools. I also am starting an after school juvenile mentoring program with my partner that will take place at an alternative school in Eloy, Arizona.

My name is Joseph Torres and I am a junior. I am from Avondale, Arizona, but I was born in Norwalk, California. I am majoring in Integrative Studies with a focus in business. I work for the radio stations Mega 104.3 and 92.7/99.3 The Beat. I work with the promotional department in marketing and I also do promotional DJ’ing. I enjoy mixing music, playing sports, hanging out with friends, eating sushi and going to the gym. The project my partner and I are working on is a student adaptation to college study. The results of the survey will allow us to analyze the areas in which new college students are struggling, and begin to improve on those areas.

Hello, my name is Jennifer Tyrrell. I am a junior in my second year as a Rodel Community Scholar here at the West Campus. I am majoring in secondary education and look forward to becoming a high school history teacher. I'm extremely excited about my project in the Rodel program. My partner and I have the opportunity to mentor at-risk adolescents at Sierra Oasis Alternative School in Eloy, Az. Overall, I am very happy to be apart of this program and cannot wait to see what the end of the year results hold for our project this year!

My name is Carolina Valenzuela. I am 18 years old and just moved to Glendale, Arizona from the small town of San Luis, AZ which is approximately 30 miles from Yuma AZ. Currently, I’m a full-time freshman at ASU at the West campus majoring in Special Education with a minor in Spanish. My project is the creation and maintenance of the Arizona Scholarship Database, a database which houses post-secondary scholarships from Arizona’s colleges and universities in one Web location.
Walsh, Angela
My name is Angela Walsh, and this is my fourth year at ASU. I am a Life Sciences major, Psychology minor, and a student in Barrett, The Honors College. I have begun working on my honors thesis this year, and after I graduate, I plan to pursue a career in pharmacy or research. This is my third year in Rodel, and after working hard for two years on the Arizona P.A.R.E.N.T. project, I am going to focus on a research-based project, The Impact of Free and or Reduced Lunch on Third Grade Mathematics AIMS Scores. I am also the Vice President of Honors Devils and the current President of Young Democrats at ASU West.

My name is Lisette Wilson and I was born and raised in Vernon, New Jersey. I graduated from Casa Verde High School in Casa Grande, AZ. This is my junior year and I am currently working on receiving a Life Science degree at Arizona State University at the West campus. This will be my third year participating in the Rodel Community Scholars Program. During my first year in Rodel, my partner and I created workshops called “Money 101” for high school students, and we won the State Farm project of the year. This year I will be working on a comparative study that examines various benchmarks and accomplishments of each state's primary university.

My name is Melissa A. Wilson and I am a senior at ASU West. I am double majoring in Psychology and Social and Behavioral Sciences with a social emphasis. After graduation I plan to attend graduate school to study population geography. This is my first year as a RODEL Community Scholar and I am excited to work with my partner Ashton Conwell to create a database of information about all schools in Arizona as a resource for professors who want to do research on children and various concerns related to education.
Zerth, Sasha
My name is Sasha Zerth and I am currently a freshman at ASU west. I am 18 years old and live in Peoria, Arizona. I am majoring in early childhood education and special education. My goal is to become a kindergarten teacher. I graduated from Peoria High School in 2008. I participated in my high school D.E.C.A. club, The Ace Plus Program and earned 24 college credits which in high school, am a member of the National Honor Roll and Phi Theta Kappa, and was a member of my high school JV and Varsity tennis teams. I am excited and look forward to working with the Rodel Community Scholars program this year to recruit students from the 150 least represented high schools at Arizona State University at the West campus.
